When is Violence Acceptable?
A lynch mob tried to get to Tom Robinson, but Atticus (with some help from Scout) stopped them. Obviously it was wrong of those men to try to hurt an innocent man, but Boo Radley also takes the law into his own hands when he kills Bob Ewell and in that case Heck Tate and Atticus think it was justified. When is violence against another person justified? Is there ever a case where people should take the law into their own hands? Should people be able to get revenge against someone who wronged them or their family?

I believe that violence can only be acceptable when in the form of self defense. Otherwise it's wrong and unethical and hinders our wat towards ultimate complexity.
ReplyDeleteSunny13
I agree with Sunny13, but only partially. What if your country is being invaded, is it ok to use violence then?
ReplyDeleteGreen backpack
Violence is good
ReplyDeleteRUBBER DUCK
Also without violence, America would still be part of England and what if we didn't use violence to stop Hitler from killing all the Jews.
ReplyDeleteGreen backpack
Okay Green backpack, if our country is being attacked, thats what our army is for.
ReplyDeleteGossip Girl
I believe that violence should only be used in certain cicumstances like self defense or for something that goes against what you believe in in a physical way. If someone is being assaulted then it is fine to fight fire with fire. Just randomly using violence any other time is wrong.
ReplyDeletePo
Personally, I believe that violence is never the answer. Some may think this is only possible in a "perfect world," but it is possible. It is only said to be human nature to be violent because this is what society and past actions of people has made us think. There is a way to not be violent. However, agreeing with Sunny13, self defense is okay, but not to kill. Violence to disarm in the case of self defense is a different story. - HPotterninja14
ReplyDeleteIt is still violence, even if our army is the one using it
ReplyDeleteSarah Palin
Using violence in jealousy or some other human emotion is wrong. Because it's greedy and selfish and can hurt others.
ReplyDeleteSunny13
Violance is always good for any thing
ReplyDeleteI think that violence should be ultimately try to be avoided, but I do think that it is sometimes necessary to keep peace. It is unnecessary violence that is unacceptable to me.
ReplyDeleteLook with out violence we would have no guns and then were would we be in iraq? Hitting people with sticks
ReplyDeleteI think that violence is only ok when used to protect yourself or somebody else, but violence is not unethical, it is just crude.
ReplyDelete-Uncle Buck
Without violence we would still have slaves
ReplyDeleteDeciding when and where violence is justified only deepens the problem. Once you give people the right to hurt others, even in cases of self defense, they see it as necessary. Once this happens people lose responsibility for their actions.
ReplyDelete-Amen
My elaberation is that if we were peaceful we would not have got in there and freed them
ReplyDeleteIn most cases it seems, violence is also only justified when the other thing attacked first, making it a case of defense again.
ReplyDelete-Uncle Buck
If we can't fite wars we would be speaking german under the jappanese flag
ReplyDeleteViolence should only be used if you or a loved one is in danger. Violence can be a good thing is some situations, but in others its not necessary.
ReplyDeleteYesss;)
Some violence is acceptable when you are trying to stand up to something, or save someone's life like when Boo stopped Bob Ewell from killing Jem. But using violence just because you don't agree with somebody or something isn't right
ReplyDeleteThere have been times thoughout history where violence has been necessary to acheive change in society. But there are many instances, especially in today's society where violence is uncalled for and not right at all.
ReplyDeleteMichael Scott
If no one wanted to fight, though we would all live peacefully and no one would get hurt. I think that the people near the top were right, violence is only acceptable in the form of self defence. But if everyone was nice to one another, there would be no need for self defence.
ReplyDelete-PinkPrincess
I believe violence is only acceptable when some one is physically hurting or trying to hurt you, your family, or your friends
ReplyDeleteI agree with PinkPrincess and Pro. Violence shouldn't be used randomly but sometimes, that's the only way to get someone to stop. If it's self defense or protecting someone who's being like physically abused, then I think it's fine.
ReplyDeleteNinja23
Look without violence there would be no politics
ReplyDeleteThe only time that violence is acceptable is when it is for the greater good. If there is an attack that kills thousands of people, and then there are more threats, then it is acceptable to attack someone, however, in this instance it would be considered self defense. There is no just cause to flat out attack someone without being provoked.- Mr. Der
ReplyDeleteI believe that violence is acceptable if you are using it in self defense. If you, your country or someone you care for is being attacked then by all means it is ok to use violence.
ReplyDeleteRickyBobby827
Violence is accepted if in the big scheme of things it helps more people than it hurts. For example if you kill a criminal out of vengence instead of an innocent little girl, it's justified.
ReplyDelete-$treet Balla
I agree with PinkPrincess. Violence is not the answer. But perhaps making up with cupcakes and hugs would be a better substitute for violence.
ReplyDeletePo
What about sports hockey would suck if no one could smash eachother then theres foot ball
ReplyDeletePo is write violence is not an answer but it is a questoin and the answer is YES!!
ReplyDeleteIt's not always easily solved this way but sometimes fights and wars can be avoided just by talking it out. But if the other party refuses to cooperate, violence can become a necessity
ReplyDeleteWhile the use of violence is very controversial I believe that there are several cases where it is acceptable even necassary. Like Green backpack said without violence the forces of evil would have free reign. If it is in the form of self defense I believe that violence is a very necessary thing. also fighting for a greater good like in the example of Hitler if we didnt fight back many more would have been killed. This is proven in history with the instance of the genocide in Rwanda. Very little action was taken and as a result millions of lives which could have been saved were brutally ripped away.
ReplyDelete-Yoda
Well just to point out violence and such can come out on a smaller scale with bullying. Is that wrong? Or just as wrong as genocide? Because things usually start out small with a few words and escalate into something big.
ReplyDeleteSunny13
NO CUPCAKES NO HUGS but i would like a cupcake please.
ReplyDeleteCupcakes and hugs don't solve much, but they build up the anger until the guy goes on a shooting spree.
ReplyDelete-Uncle Buck
I agree with Trescat that sometimes you can avoid a fight with a diplomatic solution. But when the other party refuses to cooperate and uses violence on you, you have the right to self defence. However, I think that defence is the only justifiable case of violence.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I think revenge is wrong. However, self-defence is perfectly acceptable. I know if someone was trying to kill me or my family, I would do something about it.
ReplyDelete-Maverick3-
So once again i say violence is good.
ReplyDeleteRevenge is fine. Thats what lead to WW2
ReplyDeleteThink of your favorite movie. HJow good would it be whithout death
ReplyDeleteSunny13 brings up an interesting point. Is bullying a form of violence? I think we can all agree that bullying is wrong, and bullying leads to other problems. I think violence should be avoided until lives lay in the balance.
ReplyDelete-Maverick3-
Violence used in right ways is good. Like protecting you and your loved ones. But violence isn't good when your using violence when you could be working it out without it.
ReplyDelete-Yesss;)
Rubber Duck, movies are not real life. If movies came to life, people would be terrified. Movies are for entertainment only.
ReplyDelete-Maverick3-
Violence prevents further violence.
ReplyDelete-Amen
I feel myself that violence is okay if its in self defence or if its helping a larger group of people because i feel you shoudnt just stand somewhere and let someone hurt you you should fight back.Like if someone was trying to choke you would you let them try to kill you or would you fight back i know i would. Also if you knew about someone planning to kill a group of people and you have the chance to stop them would you or would you let that group of innocent people die?
ReplyDelete$Jesta$
It is better to take a step back and try to negociate before you resort to violence. Violence should be avioded at all costs. But i would have to agree that there are some times when you do have to resort to violence.
ReplyDelete-PinkPrincess
The police can't do everthing. As an example: BATMAN. Enough said
ReplyDelete-$treet Balla
Amen, I totally see your point. People will find any way they can to justify violence. Giving them the right to even self defense is harmful, and shouldn't be done because they will see it as right and think that eventually everything will be "self defense." self defense of pride, beliefs, power....it all leads to a dead end. - HPotterninja14
ReplyDeleteViolence should only be used in an emergency situation where you or someone else is in danger. Violence is a serious matter, and if it gets out of hand, the consequences could be severe.
ReplyDeleteLemony Snicket
Pinkprincess,
ReplyDeleteviolence should try to be avoided but sometimes it is necessary. try working a deal with Bin Laden. she what happens to you then.
Pinkprincess,
ReplyDeleteviolence should try to be avoided but sometimes it is necessary. try working a deal with Bin Laden. she what happens to you then.
RickyBobby827
I think that violence is never the answer if you have a problem with someone than you should talk to them about it with your words not your hands.
ReplyDelete-Sport Chick#00
i agree with lemony sicket. you should only used violence when you are defending your self agains someone who is trying to harm you.
ReplyDeleteI dsagree with -Amen i don't think violence prevents further violence. To me that makes no sense and i think that we should not do violence especially in the efort to prevent violence
ReplyDeleteLemony Snicket, I completely agree with you. Violence is bad, except when absolutely neccassery. Otherwise, look what happened during Hitlers rule...
ReplyDeleteNinja23
In my opinion, I think what Boo Radley did was wrong. He should not have killed Bob Ewell, the man was drunk and probably could have been knocked out but not killed. There were better ways to go about the situation.
ReplyDelete-Mr. Jefferson
I entirely disagree with RUBBER DUCK's previous comment that "Violence is good." The use of violence is very serious, and can cause great pain and suffering, and very rarely does anyone deserve that.
ReplyDeleteLemony Snicket
I think violence should only be used for self defense. People should not hurt people over a small argument. I agree with PinkPrincess. You should talk it out before any physical violence happens.
ReplyDelete-Awesome Chick =)
There are clear instances where violence is a needed step (Bin Laden) but there are many times in our society where we act prematurely and dont use reason in our actions.
ReplyDeleteMichael Scott
I agree with Lemony Snicket, Hitler was wrong to kill all those people. They did nothing to him.
ReplyDelete-Mr. Jefferson
I think violence should be used in life or death situations where there are no other options.
ReplyDelete-Mr. Jefferson
LILLder you are correct on all you points so far you are doing so great keep it up!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHitler was very wrong in what he did but didn't us Americans do the same thing at one point in time?
ReplyDeleteSunny13
I disagree with RUBBER DUCK's comments. "Violance is always good for any thing". That is not true. A fight should not take place before you try to talk it out.
ReplyDelete-Awesome Chick =)
violence is acceptable in situations where someone needs help or something is repeated again and again
ReplyDeleteBottom line: violence is only acceptable in extreme situations.
ReplyDelete-PinkPrincess
In cases like the Make My Day law, or when protecting yourself or a loved one, violence can be acceptable. That doesn't mean that you can go on a rampage and everytime a person steps on your lawn you blast their head off. But in self-defense cases violence is acceptable.
ReplyDelete- PEN15Commander
I agree with Lemony Snicket, like towards the end of the book when Bob Ewell attacks them Jem attempts to hurt him though he is too strong. This shows courage as a young boy, trying to save his little sister. Only incases like this is it necessary.
ReplyDeletePink lady(:
violence is accepable in most cases
ReplyDeleteI just want to say, I am thankful Colorado has the Make My Day law.
ReplyDelete-Maverick3-
Okay one: People are signing my name when im not commenting i dont agree with that person..(:
