When is Violence Acceptable?

A lynch mob tried to get to Tom Robinson, but Atticus (with some help from Scout) stopped them. Obviously it was wrong of those men to try to hurt an innocent man, but Boo Radley also takes the law into his own hands when he kills Bob Ewell and in that case Heck Tate and Atticus think it was justified. When is violence against another person justified? Is there ever a case where people should take the law into their own hands? Should people be able to get revenge against someone who wronged them or their family?

  1. I believe that violence can only be acceptable when in the form of self defense. Otherwise it's wrong and unethical and hinders our wat towards ultimate complexity.

  2. I agree with Sunny13, but only partially. What if your country is being invaded, is it ok to use violence then?

  6. I believe that violence should only be used in certain cicumstances like self defense or for something that goes against what you believe in in a physical way. If someone is being assaulted then it is fine to fight fire with fire. Just randomly using violence any other time is wrong.

  7. Personally, I believe that violence is never the answer. Some may think this is only possible in a "perfect world," but it is possible. It is only said to be human nature to be violent because this is what society and past actions of people has made us think. There is a way to not be violent. However, agreeing with Sunny13, self defense is okay, but not to kill. Violence to disarm in the case of self defense is a different story. - HPotterninja14

  15. Deciding when and where violence is justified only deepens the problem. Once you give people the right to hurt others, even in cases of self defense, they see it as necessary. Once this happens people lose responsibility for their actions.

  17. In most cases it seems, violence is also only justified when the other thing attacked first, making it a case of defense again.

  20. Some violence is acceptable when you are trying to stand up to something, or save someone's life like when Boo stopped Bob Ewell from killing Jem. But using violence just because you don't agree with somebody or something isn't right

  21. There have been times thoughout history where violence has been necessary to acheive change in society. But there are many instances, especially in today's society where violence is uncalled for and not right at all.

  22. If no one wanted to fight, though we would all live peacefully and no one would get hurt. I think that the people near the top were right, violence is only acceptable in the form of self defence. But if everyone was nice to one another, there would be no need for self defence.

  24. I agree with PinkPrincess and Pro. Violence shouldn't be used randomly but sometimes, that's the only way to get someone to stop. If it's self defense or protecting someone who's being like physically abused, then I think it's fine.

  26. The only time that violence is acceptable is when it is for the greater good. If there is an attack that kills thousands of people, and then there are more threats, then it is acceptable to attack someone, however, in this instance it would be considered self defense. There is no just cause to flat out attack someone without being provoked.- Mr. Der

  27. I believe that violence is acceptable if you are using it in self defense. If you, your country or someone you care for is being attacked then by all means it is ok to use violence.

  28. Violence is accepted if in the big scheme of things it helps more people than it hurts. For example if you kill a criminal out of vengence instead of an innocent little girl, it's justified.

  32. It's not always easily solved this way but sometimes fights and wars can be avoided just by talking it out. But if the other party refuses to cooperate, violence can become a necessity

  33. While the use of violence is very controversial I believe that there are several cases where it is acceptable even necassary. Like Green backpack said without violence the forces of evil would have free reign. If it is in the form of self defense I believe that violence is a very necessary thing. also fighting for a greater good like in the example of Hitler if we didnt fight back many more would have been killed. This is proven in history with the instance of the genocide in Rwanda. Very little action was taken and as a result millions of lives which could have been saved were brutally ripped away.

  34. Well just to point out violence and such can come out on a smaller scale with bullying. Is that wrong? Or just as wrong as genocide? Because things usually start out small with a few words and escalate into something big.

  37. I agree with Trescat that sometimes you can avoid a fight with a diplomatic solution. But when the other party refuses to cooperate and uses violence on you, you have the right to self defence. However, I think that defence is the only justifiable case of violence.

  38. First of all, I think revenge is wrong. However, self-defence is perfectly acceptable. I know if someone was trying to kill me or my family, I would do something about it.

  46. I feel myself that violence is okay if its in self defence or if its helping a larger group of people because i feel you shoudnt just stand somewhere and let someone hurt you you should fight back.Like if someone was trying to choke you would you let them try to kill you or would you fight back i know i would. Also if you knew about someone planning to kill a group of people and you have the chance to stop them would you or would you let that group of innocent people die?

  49. Amen, I totally see your point. People will find any way they can to justify violence. Giving them the right to even self defense is harmful, and shouldn't be done because they will see it as right and think that eventually everything will be "self defense." self defense of pride, beliefs, power....it all leads to a dead end. - HPotterninja14

  68. In cases like the Make My Day law, or when protecting yourself or a loved one, violence can be acceptable. That doesn't mean that you can go on a rampage and everytime a person steps on your lawn you blast their head off. But in self-defense cases violence is acceptable.
