Ain’t it Better to Talk Good?

Scout observes that Calpurnia speaks differently at church than she does around the Finch’s house. We also see Bob Ewell struggle to speak appropriately in court. Should people be judged by the way they speak or write? Should there be a “Standard English” that all people learn and use? Is it important to write and speak with proper grammar or should people just lighten up and let us write the way we want to as long as people know what we mean?

  1. I believe that it's better to have well spoken words instead of slang because people are more successful because they get jobs. Also with proper grammer, everyone knows and understands what you mean and only some people might understand the slang you're using.

  2. I agree with this idea that their should be a standard english because in the long run it would avoid confusion and make it easier in which code to talk in. Instead of having to guess everytime.

  3. No. Where ever you go you are going to find different dialects. For example, in the south you will find a dialect sort of like Bob Ewell and if you go to England you find a british dialect.

  4. People should not be judged on the way they speak. There is no such thing as language for intelligent people and language for all the rest. It is important to get your point across, but judging someone on accents or slang is not right.

  5. I think a certain amount of slang can be tolerated at some points, like in casual conversation. But in a job interview or something, you should always use proper english.

  6. I agree with PinkPrincess. You are who you are and no one has the right to judge you on the way you speak. If you couldn't afford to go to school or something, and so you can't speak (what people call "properly") that's not entirely your fault...

  7. I think slang is great because it gives diversity to the way that everyopne speaks. but you need to use it in the correct place. for example it's good for when your with your friends but not if you are in a formal environment like work, etc.

  8. No you should be able to talk how you want.

  9. I think that proper English is partialy unnecesary because it is the people's right to speak the way they want to.

  10. I think that proper English is a good idea. I know we shouldn't be judged by the way we speak. We may not notice, but when we hear people speak, we automatically judge them for it. However I agree with Trescat that proper English most of the time is okay but not needed all the time. -HPotterninja14

  11. Nardog has it wrong you should talk how you want when you want were you want.

  12. I agree with Trescat, a certain amount of slang is good.. but when you get to much it starts to become a problem. I think you should only use enough slang where people can still understand you that speak the same language. Also i agree with NInja23 about how you are who you are.. but we also belong to a big group of people (America) and we still should use our standard language.

  13. I agreee with pinkprincess and ninja23. People should not be judged on their grammar and slang, but by what kind of person they are and what they stand for. If you cant afford an education or never had the chance to learn proper english this should not limit you or affect what your life will be like.

  14. I think that while it may be useful to have one standardized english like previously mentioned, it is also important to have the different dialects because they can give people a sense of pride in their region or wherever speaks that dialect. For example people in Pittsburgh are poud of their strong accent that has become known as "Pittsburghese"

  16. I Agree with my co-worker Narddog that slang gives us diversity.
If we all just spoke the same exact language and pronounced it the same way, we would lose a part of our culture that is very interesting.

  17. All people are different, but all men are created equal. Therefore, they are entitled to how they speak as well as their own opinions. We should not be judged by how we naturally speak. Nor how we try to speak.

  18. The ability to choose when and where slang is to be used is an important part of our society. Being able to switch back and forth shows a higher level of education and the ability to adapt to the social situations that come up.

  19. I think that instead of it being a set "standard english" it is more of a social law and expectation. So even if authorities came out and said that it no longer mattered how someone talks or writes there would still be that social expectation of a "standard" speaking in formal situations.

  20. I agree that slang and casual language can help shape who you are and we should have the right to speak however we want, but in some circumstances it just comes off to some people as sounding ignorant

  21. Aleluia, Amen! I agree with your statement. Is it better to know more of a former language and use it everywhere, or to know both slang and the language, and switch off? I put my vote for the second one.

  22. There is a middle ground. I agree with Street Balla, that in some circumstances people should speak properly. However, if Calpurnia had spoken properly to her black friends and family, they would have thought she was putting on airs.

  25. I don't think that people should have to speak or write a certain way because thats something else like the stereotypes that limits someones personality and everyone should be able to be themselfs. You as a person should chose how you want to be not society.I do agree that there are some places that a certain language should be used but it shouldn't be regulated all the time.

  26. Agreed. A lot of people are comfortable speaking in only one particular way. So it can easily offend someone when a person tells them "Don't talk like that."

  27. There are situations in which it would be better to speak properly, such as in an interveiw for a new job, or if you are on television. However, when you will not be judged based on how you talk, you can speak however you want. Mr. Der

  28. Although we'd like to think that people aren't judged on the way the think, they are. In a perfect world, everyone could speak how they wanted (as long as it was understood) and not be judged on their accent or slang. But the truth is people will judge you on that kind of stuff. That's why after reading the comments above, I have decided that there is a place for slang, but there is also a place for proper english.
    -PinkPrincess

  29. I agree with Po that if society tries to regulate how people talk their not thinking about how the person they're talking to feels they just care about how they feel trying to get people to be more how they see they should be.

  30. Maverick made a good point, within the story when Cal changes her dialect between her friends and the people she works for shows that many people act different around different people. But using different dialects, for example in a court room yuo should be as proper as you can be, but maybe around friends or family its okay to not be so proper.

  37. I disagree with Lemony Snicket that there shouldn't be any restriction on the way you speak. Should a person really be allowed to curse in front of a four year old kid just because they can not talk civilized and respectively.

  38. I agree with Uncle Buck that it is our right to speak the way we want and that nobody should tell us how to speak or the proper way of speaking when we are in unformal environments

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think that people should be able to talk how they want to without being judged by other people. There will be different slangs and dialects everywhere you go. At some times, it might be more appropriate to speak propper english, like Calpurnia when she is around the Finch children.

I agree when your at your house and want to talk you should be able to talk aby way you want! But if your inforont of a lot of people that wouldn't understand you if you talked the way you usually talk, they should learn proper english too, so they can talk to and be understood by most people.

  45. I think that people should talk well because when you talk in slang all the time then it will make you sound not educated when you were talking to people important. But I think that if you didnt have proper education then its not your fault.

  46. Green backpack, dialect and accents are different than slang. Slang is just a shortcut to get out of the work of talking to sound educated. People think educated talk has to be nerdy talk like math or school related subjects, but educated talk is good. We set the standard for talking low, and once we start with just that, all of our standards will be low, and success will be distant. -HPotterninja14

  47. When you use your grammer well and "talk good" you will be more successful in life and have the oportunity to have greater success. It can make people look up to you and respect you instead of looking down or ignoring what you say.

  53. I agree with HPotterninja14's statement that nerdy talk is not necessary in order to sound educated. Often times the most effective speeches are given using very simple but powerful words. You do not have to use an extravagant vocabulary to sound legitamate or educated.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Talking and how you speak is all about how you want to portray yourself. If you wanted to come across as well educated then you should speak well. But if you have enough confidence not to care, then you should speak how you want.

  56. Different dialects can mean different things to different people. It is very important to be able to switch between different kinds of speech like we talked about in class. If you dont you may sound ignorant like mentioned earlier or won't be accepted into a group if you talk with a more sophisticated form of language because they may think you are trying to make then look inferior to you.
