Should Girls Act Like Girls?

Scout is a tomboy and drives Aunt Alexandra crazy with her failure to “act like a girl.” Girls today certainly have more freedom than they did in Scout’s time, but are there still different standards for boys and girls behavior? In today’s world do labels like “tomboy” make sense anymore? Is there the same kind of pressure on boys to “act like boys”? Why or why not?

  1. I think girls should behave however they want to and shouldn't have to worry about what the public thinks about it. it is their chose to what interest they have, and not societies

  3. It says that girls should act like girls but to me, its up to that person. You should have the right to act and dress the way you want to. Besides, what do you define as "acting like a girl"??

  4. The term "acting like a boy" is simply a stereotype, assuming that boys are always tough and adventerous, yet the whole moral of the book is anti-stereotypes, degrading those who choose to judge based on assumption.

  5. Even though there is less pressure today, girls are taught to still act like girls. Girls are protryed in the media as helpless and weak so that is what the world thinks girls should be like. If they aren't like that, the media portrays them as outsiders. There is also pressure for guys to be manly and strong. Guys shouldn't be emotional. There are specific ways each gender should act.

  6. In my opinion, girls should just act the way they feel is right for them. Whatever way they act is always going to be acting like a girl.

  7. I don't think that girls should have to act like girls. Since they are girls, isn't however they act acting like girls? I think that it is stupid that there are specific ways that the society assumes all girls or boys will act. I also think that there is much of the same pressure on boys to act like boys. For example they arent supposed to cry.

  8. In today's world girls do have more freedom, but they don't have as much freedom as boys do. We still say, "You play like a girl". In my opinion girls are the same (most of the time) better then boys and we should be able to do anything a boy can.

  9. I think that there is much less pressure and expectation to dress or act a certain way. The gender stereotype has been repealed by society -- now, to have the courage to be different or diverse is promoted and admired.

Who defines what "Acting Like a Girl" is?
It is impossible to do this because everyone has a different opinion of what a girl is.
If you base "What a girl is" on stereotypes then that is not right either.
Girls should act how they want to act.

  16. In regards to RUBBER DUCK's comment, I'm not really following what the insent of your comment is. Isn't saying that women have become too full of themselves contradicting the point itself, suggesting that women are expected to just sit back and do nothing with themselves? How is that justifiable to your arguement?

  18. I agree that there is somewhat less pressure on how people are supposed to act, but there are still certain limitations that we follow because of society. Boys are said not to act like girls because that means they are either too girly or gay. Society still puts out expectations for each gender.

  20. I disagree that Scout is accepted throughout the book. People consider that Scout is a messed up little girl(including Aunt Alexandria) and that she is out of controll due to the fact that she has no mother.

  21. In my opinion, who defines what a girl should be like and what a boy should be like? Right now we have society telling us how we should and shouldn't act and dress, but I there shouldn't be a set way for people to act. It also isn't fair that girls can act like guys and get away with it, but as soon as a guy acts like a girl it is just the worst thing they could do! This happens because we see society as male dominated, so it is okay. However you should be able to act the way you want. There should be no "standard" man and woman. - HPotterninja14

  22. I think that the more serious issue of today is the pressure on boys to act like boys because of society's increasing fear and dissaproval of homosexuality.

I think that evryone not just girls should act they way they want so they are not being pressured to be someone they dont want to be. noone should fit ito sterotypes because then everyone would be the same and noone would have their own personality, and alot of the time thats what makes people like other people.

  27. Ninja23 is right, and so is Yoda. Both girls and boys are stereotyped, and nobody wants to have to fit into society's idea of a "girl" or a "boy". In America, we have freedom to act and do whatever we want, and that includes girls.

  28. Now a days it is ok for girls to not "act like girls." Girls wear baggy sweatpants and sweatshirts to school and it is totally acceptable. Tomboys are becoming more common as high school athletics become a big deal. There is defintely more pressure for boys to "act like boys." Yah dawggy. If I wore a miniskirt and a low cut shirt to school I would be hammered by offensive comments and ridiculed to death. It is still expected that boys act all tough and manly.

There are also many places where girls excel over guys. 58. I agree that whoever a person is, is who a person is and society may dissaprove of them but does not have the right to try and change who they are. And this also brings up the issue of society's dissapproval of homosexuals. What some people fail to realize is that being gay is part of who someone is and cannot be changed.
