Is it All Right to Fail?

In his closing statement Atticus says that the phrase “all men are created equal” is often misused. He cites the example of teachers who “promote the stupid and idle along with the industrious--because [otherwise] the children left behind suffer terrible feelings of inferiority.” There has been a lot of debate in the media recently about the practice of “social promotion” in which all students are promoted to the next grade whether they pass or fail the standardized tests and “participation ribbons” where every competitor gets a ribbon whether they win or lose. Is it important to protect kids’ self-esteem or is it better to hold even young people accountable for their actual performance?

  1. I think that it is alright to fail, but people should still suffer the consequences of it. This rewards people who work hard for their effort, and teaches people who don't why they should start putting forth more. When they are all grown up, the people who work hard will be successful, and the people who slack will be working at McDonalds.

  2. I believe that even young people should be held accountable for their performance. In the real world everyone does not get a ribbon and everyone does not always win. It is important that children learn to deal with failure and then use that experience to do better the next time.

  3. I believe that in some cases, it is alright to fail. While its neither accepted or encouraged in our society, there are some cases where winning simply cannot be done, such as is the case with Atticus. If you are defending a black man in the 1930's with very little evidence, its almost impossible to win and in a case like this failure is acceptable.

  4. I think that it's alright to fail as long as you gave your best effort and tried your hardest. "You don't have to be THE best, just YOUR best."

  5. "Social Promotion" is actually hurting the kids more than helping. If they get put along in school without actually knowing the material, they will get farther and farther behind and eventually not be able to catch up. It is more important that the kids know the material then that they have high esteem.

  6. failure is all right as long as you learn from it and dont make the same mistakes next time. Also if you fail it's okay as long as you tried your hardest,And don't give up because then if you fail at least you know you did the best you could

  7. i believe that is always alright to fail because when you fail you learn and try try try again.

  8. I think failing at some things can teach people that they can't always get everything they want and success is not always easy to achieve

  9. I think that it depends on the circumstances. If it ends up like the case of Atticus defending Tom Robinson were it is almost hopeless to win, it is alright to fail if you have tried your best and made some difference.
However it is not alright to fail when you just give up.

  10. Although we may all like to succed, there is no success without failure. If one never knows what it feels like to fail, then one can never really expirience success. That is why it is alright to fail. Mr. Der

  11. I agree with Ninja23 because it's important to do the best you can but it is also important to teach children that they will not always win. However, I think this lesson can be taught in ways other than telling children that they are failures. We should teach them to accept when they do fail but try harder next time.

  12. The most reasonable way to handle this is to say "you are amazing and i bet you could ger a better score next time," you just keep saying that until they get better and better at what their doing.

  13. Also, failing can be a good motivator. If you fail once, then you'll be more determined to try harder. But it is not okay just to give up when you fail.

  14. We learn from our mistakes. Our mistakes play a big part in who we are as people. So it is all right to fail. Failing helps us realize what we did wrong so we can improve with that information.

  15. I think that it is alright to fail. All men are created equal means that all men should be not given advantages because of race, social status, or religion. However failure is okay. It helps you in the long run to actually succeed. If you have never failed, you can never succeed. -HPotterninja14

  16. By failing, we learn "the hard way" to deal with our own problems, and learn supposedly what is right and wrong in our lives in first hand experience. Saying that it is wrong to fail isn't a fair argument, as everyone will make a mistake in their lives, and it will only make you grow stronger.

  17. What happens if you fail so many times you become depressed and suicidal? Should people try and give those people some success to keep them from killing themselves?

  18. In my opinion, I think kids need to learn at an early age that it's ok to fail, and even though you don't get rewarded for your performance, it doesn't mean that they're terrible.

  20. Failing is a part of life. Of course, nobody likes to fail, but everyone does. Kids need to learn that lesson early, because life isn't perfect. There also needs to be some kind of motivator, whether it's internal or external.

  21. i agree with Trescat's coment it is alright to fail but you shouldn't give up you should take that failure and learn from it that way you dont make the same mistake again. I also feel that learning from your mistakes is what makes you smarter because you know what does and doesn't work.

  24. Trescat makes a good point. Failing is like a new beginning, you fall and you get back up and either try again, or to change it for the better. Either by creating goals, or to learn from your mistakes. There's always the opportunity to learn from it.

That is very true! With regards to the book were Atticus said all men are created equal, they absoultly are. Everyone is the same, but not eveyone has the same chance to succed in life.

I think that Trescat has a good point -- failing is a very effective way to learn and grow. For exmample, Thomas Edison's invention of the lightbulb took over 2,000 failures, but we learned extensively from all of these failues.

  35. Failure teaches us how to get back up and try again. It's better to fail the first time and finally understand it the second time then too. Suceed the first time but not understand the material.

  50. I agree with Ninja23. Just because you failed doesn't mean that you didn't work you wardest to do what you could. Your own best isn't what everyone else's is. There will be people who are smarter, faster, and better than you. Failure is a part of life that everyone will encounter, but if it is all that you encounter, you will never grow. So doing participation ribbons isn't always a bad thing. You give the one who won a prize, but the rest tried their own best. -HPotterninja14

  51. I strongly agree with Maverick3. Everyone fails, whether they like it or not. If we didn't fail we just wouldn't be human. Failing is not always a bad thing. It is simply a part of life that comes along every once in awhile. People should think of it as a motivation to do better, not something that should allow a person to never do something ever again. Just try and try again.

  52. Mr. Der is right. Failure brings experience and it is up to the individual to choose to learn from that experience and persist in pursuing success.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Trescat makes a good point in saying that failure can serve as a good motivator. When someone fails they are almost always inspired to do better next time. Like when Atticus fail to defend Tom Robinson the impact of the trial makes many members of the community change their racist views and perhaps if something like this comes up again it will not end in te same tragedy.

  58. As we are growing up and maturing, failing is acceptable and to a degree somewhat expected. Like the Little Train That Could, we are encouraged to try and try again if things do not work out the first time you try them. This does not mean that you can fail all your classes and make up an excuse saying that I will try and try again, but for things like making new friends and trying to find a significant other, perseverance is key. Keep on truckin'!

  60. I think that when Atticus fails in the trial it was not because he did a bad job it was because it was a lost cause. He still did a good job of standing up for what he believed in and that shows you that Atticus didn;'t fail he showed his kids and everybody else the terrible issue of prejudice
