Is it All Right to Fail?
In his closing statement Atticus says that the phrase “all men are created equal” is often misused. He cites the example of teachers who “promote the stupid and idle along with the industrious--because [otherwise] the children left behind suffer terrible feelings of inferiority.” There has been a lot of debate in the media recently about the practice of “social promotion” in which all students are promoted to the next grade whether they pass or fail the standardized tests and “participation ribbons” where every competitor gets a ribbon whether they win or lose. Is it important to protect kids’ self-esteem or is it better to hold even young people accountable for their actual performance?

I think that it is alright to fail, but people should still suffer the consequences of it. This rewards people who work hard for their effort, and teaches people who don't why they should start putting forth more. When they are all grown up, the people who work hard will be successful, and the people who slack will be working at McDonalds.
ReplyDeleteI believe that even young people should be held accountable for their performance. In the real world everyone does not get a ribbon and everyone does not always win. It is important that children learn to deal with failure and then use that experience to do better the next time.

I believe that in some cases, it is alright to fail. While its neither accepted or encouraged in our society, there are some cases where winning simply cannot be done, such as is the case with Atticus. If you are defending a black man in the 1930's with very little evidence, its almost impossible to win and in a case like this failure is acceptable.
ReplyDeleteRickyBobby827
I think that it's alright to fail as long as you gave your best effort and tried your hardest. "You don't have to be THE best, just YOUR best."
ReplyDeleteNinja23
"Social Promotion" is actually hurting the kids more than helping. If they get put along in school without actually knowing the material, they will get farther and farther behind and eventually not be able to catch up. It is more important that the kids know the material then that they have high esteem.
ReplyDelete-PinkPrincess
failure is all right as long as you learn from it and dont make the same mistakes next time. Also if you fail it's okay as long as you tried your hardest,And don't give up because then if you fail at least you know you did the best you could
ReplyDeletei believe that is always alright to fail because when you fail you learn and try try try again.
ReplyDeleteI think failing at some things can teach people that they can't always get everything they want and success is not always easy to achieve
ReplyDeleteI think that it depends on the circumstances. If it ends up like the case of Atticus defending Tom Robinson were it is almost hopeless to win, it is alright to fail if you have tried your best and made some difference.
ReplyDeleteHowever it is not alright to fail when you just give up.
-Yoda
Although we may all like to succed, there is no success without failure. If one never knows what it feels like to fail, then one can never really expirience success. That is why it is alright to fail. Mr. Der
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ninja23 because it's important to do the best you can but it is also important to teach children that they will not always win. However, I think this lesson can be taught in ways other than telling children that they are failures. We should teach them to accept when they do fail but try harder next time.
ReplyDeleteThe most reasonable way to handle this is to say "you are amazing and i bet you could ger a better score next time," you just keep saying that until they get better and better at what their doing.
ReplyDelete-xXChitsuukiXx
Also, failing can be a good motivator. If you fail once, then you'll be more determined to try harder. But it is not okay just to give up when you fail.
ReplyDeleteWe learn from our mistakes. Our mistakes play a big part in who we are as people. So it is all right to fail. Failing helps us realize what we did wrong so we can improve with that information.
ReplyDeletePo
I think that it is alright to fail. All men are created equal means that all men should be not given advantages because of race, social status, or religion. However failure is okay. It helps you in the long run to actually succeed. If you have never failed, you can never succeed. -HPotterninja14
ReplyDeleteBy failing, we learn "the hard way" to deal with our own problems, and learn supposedly what is right and wrong in our lives in first hand experience. Saying that it is wrong to fail isn't a fair argument, as everyone will make a mistake in their lives, and it will only make you grow stronger.
ReplyDeleteWhat happens if you fail so many times you become depressed and suicidal? Should people try and give those people some success to keep them from killing themselves?
ReplyDeleteSarah Palin
In my opinion, I think kids need to learn at an early age that it's ok to fail, and even though you don't get rewarded for your performance, it doesn't mean that they're terrible.
ReplyDelete-Mr. Jefferson
I think if you try your best, it is alright to fail sometimes. You will never be able to succed if you dont fail.
ReplyDelete-Awesome Chick =)
Failing is a part of life. Of course, nobody likes to fail, but everyone does. Kids need to learn that lesson early, because life isn't perfect. There also needs to be some kind of motivator, whether it's internal or external.
ReplyDelete-Maverick3-
i agree with Trescat's coment it is alright to fail but you shouldn't give up you should take that failure and learn from it that way you dont make the same mistake again. I also feel that learning from your mistakes is what makes you smarter because you know what does and doesn't work.
ReplyDelete$Jesta$
"The only real failure in life is the failure to try.”
ReplyDeleteYou can only fail if you dont try.. my opinion at least.
Gossip Girl

ReplyDeleteLemony Snicket
Trescat makes a good point. Failing is like a new beginning, you fall and you get back up and either try again, or to change it for the better. Either by creating goals, or to learn from your mistakes. There's always the opportunity to learn from it.
ReplyDeletePink lady(:
Po makes a great point. You learn from your mistakes. Nobody gets everything right on the first try. You just have to get up and keep trying.
ReplyDelete-Maverick3-
For most people it is not possible to fail at everything they do. There's almost always something you are doing right. Certain amounts of failure can be good but not if it makes you depressed
ReplyDeleteIn agreement to Yoda's views, it is justifiable to fail if the work is done, but if you just give up on your goals, you have only hurt yourself.
ReplyDeleteLemony Snicket
A disagree, I think if kids fail so many times that they should try something different because everyone is good at something.
ReplyDelete-Mr. Jefferson
Fail all you want your mistakes will make you better.
ReplyDeleteFailure is an important part of learning and teaches 100x more than success. I've failed so many times I can't count them, but I learned from almost each one something important.
ReplyDelete-Uncle Buck
I agree with Ninja23. As long as you try your best, it's enough. Every situation is different, but even young children need to understand the value of trying hard.
ReplyDeleteLemony Snicket
ReplyDeleteThat is very true! With regards to the book were Atticus said all men are created equal, they absoultly are. Everyone is the same, but not eveyone has the same chance to succed in life.
lollypopsickle
But, I also agree with Sarah Palin. I think that even if somone is trying their best, they should get the consequences they deserve.
ReplyDeleteI think that Trescat has a good point -- failing is a very effective way to learn and grow. For exmample, Thomas Edison's invention of the lightbulb took over 2,000 failures, but we learned extensively from all of these failues.

What about adults.. what happens if they fail??? Not just kids fail, not everyone is perfect.
Gossip Girl
Failure teaches us how to get back up and try again. It's better to fail the first time and finally understand it the second time then too. Suceed the first time but not understand the material.
ReplyDeleteSunny13
I agree with Mr. Der....there is no success with out faliure. Otherwise, what would define sucess?
ReplyDelete-PinkPrincess
That is a stupid question. why would it ever be ok to fail unless you were a dumb a*s
ReplyDeleteI agree with -Maverick3- every body does eventually fail at one point. And they need to learn that it is okay at an early age
ReplyDeleteI beleive its ok to fail, as long as you tried your best, because if you tried your best and did all you could, I guess you were meant to fail.
ReplyDeleteGreen backpack
failing fits its title. i dont know why that question would have been asked. everyones goal is to succeed.
ReplyDeleteNo one wants to fail but success all the time is not an achieveable thing to do. If all we did is succeed then there would be no true success, seeing failure makes success a real experience.
ReplyDeleteMichael Scott
I agree with pinkprincess. There are winners and losers in life. And there is no success without failure. How many people do you know who are famous and successful and hasnt EVER FAILED? think about it lillder.
ReplyDeleteRickyBobby827
If you failed it shows it is time for you to quit. Either you are fighting an unstoppable cause or you are just not good at what you are doing. So no failing is not okay.
ReplyDelete-Amen
i agree with Mcdonald. Were would we be without failures along the way
ReplyDeleteFailure is accepted if you actually tried to succeed but it isn't ok if you just gave up and quit. Quitting always brings failure.
ReplyDeleteI feel like if you think it is ok to fail then you wont have any goals to reach for in life. When you think it is ok to fail then you don't have the right mind set to take on tough times.
ReplyDelete-Sporty chick#00
It is good to protect your child's self esteem but kids should learn at a young age that NOT EVERYBODY IS A WINNER! Enough said.
ReplyDelete-$treet Balla
I agree with Trescat and Nappyflappy, failures are a part of life.
ReplyDeleteNinja23
I agree with Trescat. While it may be ok to fail, it is not ok to quit. Tomas Edison failed at making a lightbulb hundreds of times, but he did not give up. Where would we be today if he had? -Mr. Der
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ninja23. Just because you failed doesn't mean that you didn't work you wardest to do what you could. Your own best isn't what everyone else's is. There will be people who are smarter, faster, and better than you. Failure is a part of life that everyone will encounter, but if it is all that you encounter, you will never grow. So doing participation ribbons isn't always a bad thing. You give the one who won a prize, but the rest tried their own best. -HPotterninja14
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with Maverick3. Everyone fails, whether they like it or not. If we didn't fail we just wouldn't be human. Failing is not always a bad thing. It is simply a part of life that comes along every once in awhile. People should think of it as a motivation to do better, not something that should allow a person to never do something ever again. Just try and try again.
ReplyDeletePo
Mr. Der is right. Failure brings experience and it is up to the individual to choose to learn from that experience and persist in pursuing success.
ReplyDeleteTrescat makes a good point in saying that failure can serve as a good motivator. When someone fails they are almost always inspired to do better next time. Like when Atticus fail to defend Tom Robinson the impact of the trial makes many members of the community change their racist views and perhaps if something like this comes up again it will not end in te same tragedy.
ReplyDelete-Yoda
So it sounds like everyone is saying that failure happens, and you have to push past it. What if failure causes injures or deaths?
ReplyDelete-Maverick3-
Yes but then again should we just have a society full of failures because we chose to leave them behind and they were never able to catch up?
ReplyDeleteSunny13
Failure gives you expierience to make better descisions next time. If you evalutate why you failed, you can improve for next time.
ReplyDelete-PinkPrincess
i Share the same thoughts as Mr. Der because there are many failures that have ben retried and have contributed in a positive way to our lives now so just think what would happen if everyone who failed just gave up how lazy and useless our race would be.
ReplyDelete$Jesta$
As we are growing up and maturing, failing is acceptable and to a degree somewhat expected. Like the Little Train That Could, we are encouraged to try and try again if things do not work out the first time you try them. This does not mean that you can fail all your classes and make up an excuse saying that I will try and try again, but for things like making new friends and trying to find a significant other, perseverance is key. Keep on truckin'!
ReplyDelete- PEN15Commander
I agree with PinkPrincess, that is a very good piont, whrn you fail you learn from your mistakes, and then you get better at what your doing.
ReplyDeleteGreen backpack
I think that when Atticus fails in the trial it was not because he did a bad job it was because it was a lost cause. He still did a good job of standing up for what he believed in and that shows you that Atticus didn;'t fail he showed his kids and everybody else the terrible issue of prejudice
